   Major John Sheppard of the United States Air Force once defied a direct order and rescued two servicemen behind enemy lines. Because of this, he was posted at Antarctica's McMurdoch AF Base as a pilot transporting passengers to and fro. That was until one day when he flew one General Jack O'Neill and was almost shot down by an alien drone. Given top level clearance upon reaching the base, he wandered in and found out about many things, including that he carried a very dominant and very alien gene also know as the ATA (Ancient Technology Activation) gene. He sat down in the Ancient Weapons Platform and it lit up instantly. Because of his natural ability to activate Ancient artifacts, Dr. Elizabeth Weir recruited him into the Atlantis expedition, where he is now.

   Personally, John is a man with a wry wit that doesn't use his mathematical genius openly. He listens to his gut and common sense more often than authority. And even though he can let his anger best him, taking out any who threaten his team even if it costs him his own life, he remains a gentleman with a positive attitude and a charming personality.
